Review Roundup: Critics Go Down the Rabbit Hole At ALICE BY HEART

www.broadwayworld.com: When the madness of the world is too much to bear, we take refuge in the stories we love. Tony and Grammy award-winning creators of Spring Awakening, Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik, reunite for their new musical Alice By Heart, inspired by Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and directed and co-written by Jessie Nelson (Waitress). In the rubble of the London Blitz of World War II, Alice Spencer's budding teen life is turned upside down, and she and her dear friend Alfred are forced to take shelter in an underground tube station. When the ailing Alfred is quarantined, Alice encourages him to escape with her into their cherished book and journey down the rabbit hole to Wonderland.

I agree with what some of the critics said. The stories of Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass have been made into so many things besides the original book that for one to make an adaptation of either of those stories successful, there really needs to be a strong sense of why this story matters and why they are adapting this story as opposed to another one of starting with a completely original story. From the critics, it sounds like there was not that sense of why. Many of the critics said that the music was good, and what was lacking was the character development and clarity of where the story is. I think those are both things that can be fixed with a show if the writers wanted to. More workshops and some script edits seem to be what this show needs to succeed. The plot to me sounds fine, I’m just not sure I really need to see another adaptation of the story of Alice. This show sounds fine, it just doesn’t sound like anything new.
