Update: Local 802 Responds to Dispute with BE MORE CHILL Orchestrator

www.broadwayworld.com: Be More Chill officially began its Broadway run last week, and while the show is already celebrating an exciting milestone, conflict as has arisen between the show and Local 802, the union for professional musicians. As BroadwayWorld reported yesterday, Orchestrator Charlie Rosen took to Facebook to explain why the union has prevented him from performing in the pit as Guitar 2 & Ukulele.

This just seems like one large miscommunication. Another reason I don’t have to be a head over heels supporter of unions. While it’s good to see a union reinforcing its rules to maintain relationships with the Broadway League, it’s disappointing that this wasn’t handled better. The article itself does not do a great job at why Charlie Rosen is the one being asking off the production of Be More Chill and really no other article explains why he was asked to leave, but nobody else was. I also think that is this rule has previously not been reinforced and they want to maintain good repor with the Broadway League, what’s stopped that from happening in the past? I think that Mr. Rosen did the right thing by explaining the initial situation and then refining his statements later once he was given further clarification on the entire situation. The entire thing shouldn’t have happened in the first place, but at least it’s resolved now.
