LD Michael Berger Brings Live Action to Love Actually

Stage Directions: California based lighting designer, Michael Berger, recently took on the unusual commission of lighting a special musical stage production of the BAFTA award winning (and Golden Globe nominated) feel good movie, Love Actually, using a number of fixtures from the GLP portfolio.

When I saw this article, I became very excited, simply because I enjoy the movie “Love Actually.” Although I don’t think it’s the best movie it is a fairly good one that pulls on the heart strings and emotions every so gently. This article gives a clip and some pictures and I am actually fairly disappointed by it. I think my disappointment comes from a technical standpoint but also relates to the difference in mediums. The film has so many locations and details that are being lost in this theatre’s musical presentation of it. This throws me off. They also use clips from the movie itself as media projection just like the film did but the actors aren’t the same. You have to disbelief the on stage acting but also belief in the movie as reality at the same time. I find this annoying. I believe this all really comes down to the fact that movies are detailed and don’t require disbelief whereas theatre does require that disbelief. Therefore, it is not the best idea to take a film and put it into theatre. Whereas theatre can be turned into film. It is easier to translate from disbelief to reality than reality to disbelief especially while doing them in the same time frame. Overall, I like where this theatre is thinking but I don’t like what they have done with this film and how they did it.
