Oscars 2019: ‘Black Panther’s’ Ruth E. Carter makes the record book with costume design win

Los Angeles Times: “Black Panther” costume designer Ruth E. Carter made history on Sunday as the first African American to win the costume design Oscar for her work on the Marvel blockbuster.

Carter was chosen for the Academy Award ahead of “Mary Poppins Returns” and “The Favourite” designer Sandy Powell, who was nominated twice this year and already has three Oscars. Also competing were “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” designer Mary Zophres and “Mary Queen of Scots” designer Alexandra Byrne.

This is a tremendous win for not only Ruth Carter but for this industry as a whole. Hearing Ruth Carter speak so intricately about her designs for Black Panther and her design process was not only thrilling, but inspiring to see and hear. I think that the fact that she is the first black costume design to win this Academy Award is both surprising and heartwarming, if anyone deserves it, it is her. As she so eloquently said in her acceptance speech, this has been a long time coming- I know tons of extraordinary designers of color, who bring stories to life from all around the globe, and I hope that the Oscars continues to not only invite these people into their mix but also celebrate their work and existence. As a young aspiring person of color in this industry, it was really inspiring to see someone who takes up their space, just as much as her white counterparts, who is incredibly knowledgable in the field she works in, and isn't afraid to tell stories that matter.

I love Ruth Carter so much. When she came to CMU I was so happy that we got the opportunity to hear her speak because she is doing amazing things in this industry and her designs are somewhat revolutionary. I am so happy that she won because she really deserved it. She really dug deep into all African heritages and tried to represent the cultures in as correct a way as possible - pulling inspiration but not copying while still keeping the meaning behind it. I am amazed at how she works and the amount of effort she puts in every day. I hope that one day I can be like her because she is honestly one of the most inspirational people I have seen. I really cannot wait to see what she does in the future because she is and will be doing amazing things for this industry that will change it.
