No Where to Go but up

Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama: When Carnegie Mellon School of Drama alumnus Rob Marshall (A 1982) talks about the success of his latest big screen musical, “Mary Poppins Returns,” he doesn’t linger on the positive reviews, awards and honors — although there are many — he instead mentions the impact on those who experience it.

“I have seen how it has transformed people’s lives. They have told me it has helped them deal with loss. It has given much needed feeling, a lift, a sense of joy,” Marshall explains. “I wanted to send the message of this film out into the world now. A message of hope and light in a dark time. This is the moment that we all needed [Mary Poppins] to return!”

It is always cool to hear about our alumni. Whether its something about their work, what they have achieved, or what they are currently working on; it always seems to that they really branch out and do something truly amazing. Some of their stuff is big and some of it is very small but nevertheless I find myself quite impressed. This article is particularly interesting because it talks about one of our alumni and this weird sub-sect of film where film meets theatre. It makes sense because we teach theatre here but we branch out into film after graduation. It is unique that Rob has really dived into this sub-sect and put on some amazing musical films. This rebirth of Mary Poppins is also wonderful as I remember watching it as a kid but even then it seemed to be dying off. Keeping musicals alive is wonderful and at this point it is great to reach the masses through this film format.

It’s always really weird for me to hear or read about alumni that have gone to Carnegie Mellon. There are tons of articles of famous people winning amazing awards that have gone to Carnegie Mellon and for some reason it’s always a little funny to me. For example, this article started off with “When Carnegie Mellon School of Drama alumnus Rob Marshall (A 1982) talks about the success of his latest big screen musical, “Mary Poppins Returns”. They put where he went to school as if it were a title, which I guess most people consider it to be one. Understandably, where you study should be mentioned, but it feels weird to make it a title. I feel like your current job should be your “title” as opposed to the college you went to. I guess in article such as this, it makes sense to include the name since they are talking about film and because it pertains to the school.
