Makita AWS-Ready HEPA Backpack Vacuum XCV10ZX

Pro Tool Reviews: The Makita AWS-Ready HEPA Backpack Vacuum is the brand’s newest portable vac offering for the cordless jobsite. Makita intends for this vac to bridge the gap between smaller onboard dust extraction and larger, less-mobile, wheeled, canister-style job site vacuums.

With OSHA's new rules on the emission of concrete dust, I think backpack HEPA vacuums should become the new normal. Now, every time you drill a hole in concrete or have to cut concrete, the odds are there is also going to be a vacuum next to you. While using a tradition style shop vacuum works, it can be a pain to have to move it around with you as you work. With small wheels and a power cord that seems to always want to be in front of the wheels, shop vacuums are no fun to wheel around. With a backpack vacuum, the vacuum is always with you. You can walk around the job site carrying your drill or whatever tool you are using while keeping it connected to your vacuum with ease. On top of this, I have always been a fan of vacuums you wear on your back. When we used to vacuum my highschool's theater, we had a backpack vacuum just because it was easier to manage when vacuuming amongst the seats.

The main feature I found interesting on this Makita new tool is the AWS capability. The technology is to set a common communication standard between tools to make them work together. In this case, the vacuum backpack can be synced with whatever hand tool you are bringing with and connect to the trigger on it. This type of mechanism opens a series of availability between tool combinations, and even widen the original limited usage due to the space regulations. For theatrical industry specifically, we are usually prohibit to use router or circ saw along with any other kind of tools that generate good amount of dust. How ever, if the dust can be collect before the moment it falls on the floor, this rule might have changed. The other benefit from the AWS capability is that we can worry one thing less while we are using portable power tools. Though it is still a trade off, you are carrying much more weight with you.
