Elton John “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” Tour

PLSN: The legendary Elton John is on his “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour. With a career spanning 50 years, his tour, which launched Sept. 8, will travel to five continents and perform more than 300 shows. Selling more than 300 million records and numerous accolades to his credit — Grammy Awards, BRIT Awards, an Academy and Tony Award, and even a British knighthood since 1998 — few can match the talent, longevity and popularity attained by this 71-year-old artist.

Whenever you see or hear about Elton John, you have to know that he's a performer. He's perhaps one of the few acts that use elements as a way to add to his show, rather than distract from a lack of talent. If you look at shows from back in the 70's, his performances are engaging and electrifying. His then further use of costumes, and other elements simply became part of his brand. This farewell show needs to be over-the-top for an already seemingly over-the-top performer. When reading the lighting designers bit, I think that it was interesting that each song was its own show in a way. This farewell tour combines all the great eras and hits, and the design needs to encompass the energy that each individual song has. The photos of the lighting and media design are quite stunning, and very visually engaging - much like Elton. I was specifically drawn to a photo of the media design for one of the songs, I think in comparison to the usual bright yellows and reds, it made a statement: this dying grey flower surrounded by a dark frame. However, I think it also just shows the range of the musician and his time in the musical world.

This article sent me through so many emotions. Growing up on Elton John’s music, like every fan, this tour is so bittersweet. His spectacular performances, costumes, and overall essence is enchanting. While I unfortunately didn’t get to see Elton John when he was in my hometown due to college duties in Pittsburgh, so many of my friend sent me videos and were wowed by the concert as a whole, design and performance. I was intrigued and delighted to see Tait mentioned so many times in this article for the design of the set. Seeing that makes me grateful to go to a school with so many connections in the field and lets me see what I could be doing in future years. I’m excited to hear more news about Elton’s farewell tour and see the Rocketman movie coming out soon! Honestly the previews didnt make it seem that great but visually looks really good, I hope it lives up to the expectation!
