Style 412 teams with Carnegie Mellon's Lunar Gala for a lesson in fashion

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: A dozen or so (mostly rookie) designers sit at tables in a nondescript room. Seated across from them are Pittsburgh-based fashion professionals who are there to help tell them what it takes to turn garment illustrations and fabric swatches into something wearable and wonderful.

I am currently working on Lunar Gala along with a whole slew of other CMU Drama students. I honestly play a miniscule part in this production, but it has been incredibly rewarding to be part of the process. As a freshman, I have no previous Lunar Galas to compare this one to, but based on this article it seems that the seriousness of all aspects of the production have been elevated this year. I think the prep and support from real designers, hair and makeup artists, and Studio 412 shows just how much care is going into making this show as professional as possible. It’s wonderful that students of all majors-- including ones that might never intersect with fashion design-- are getting the opportunity and freedom to be part of something on this grand of a scale. It’s also been so fun to see an entirely School of Drama production team flexing their skills and artistry in a non-theater space.

I am also working on Lunar Gala this year as an assistant stage manager. I didn't realize that students were able to get feedback and advice from actual fashion designers! The outfits are so beautiful and knowing that tons of the designers are not from CFA I was curious as to how they went about designing and constructing the lines if they had no previous experience. I am really glad there are people outside of CFA working on this because I was honestly assuming it would be a bunch of costume designers from School of Drama and maybe a few design students. I have met so many new people from this and as davine mentioned we are such a small part of this. I have friends and roommates who have been rehearsing since September. This has been such a crazy experience and a lot more exciting and hectic than I expected and I hope to be involved next year.

So I helped with Lunar Gala and it is really interesting to see another part of the production. I only helped as an Usher and with strike so I did not touch this side of the show. It was really fun to see so many School of Drama kids on this show because I am pretty sure there was at least one School of Drama student in every section of this show. There were designers, models, production staff, etc. It is also amazing that this is the only fashion show in Pittsburgh and that so many people come to see it every year. The designs are amazing and I cannot believe that the students are the ones that make them. Watching the show this year really inspired me and I hope that I can play a more active role next year because I would love to design a line and get it showcased.
