The Top 10 Costume Design Schools

Hollywood Reporter: Legendary costume designer Edith Head once noted: "Fashion is a language: Some know it, some learn it, some never will." No doubt the eight-time Oscar winner, who attended Chouinard Art Institute, would be amazed at the technological changes in the field — a BFA or MFA degree certainly can help with keeping up. THR consulted with leading costume designers and professors for a breakdown (not ranked) of the top 10 schools for film and TV costume design.

This article was a little mundane, but it was still an interesting look into some other schools with costume design programs. These lists of which college is the best come out every year from multiple different sources, but I feel like they are really all arbitrary, how can one really choose what the best program is? It all depends on what the person judging them, values the most in a program, and I feel like that’s different for everyone. Regardless, Carnegie Mellon is number two on the list, meaning that whatever this author valued the most: we are obviously doing pretty good at it. CalArts seems to have a program that focuses a lot more on entertainment immersive experiences, and less on theatrical setting specifically, which is why I think they were ranked as number one. Immersive experiences, virtual realities simulations, and other things like this are on the rise in the entertainment industry, and the judges obviously think that it’s important for students to be studying what coming up for the future. But as I said, it’s all arbitrary, and I think CMU does a great job at teaching us about all of those things as well, we just might not advertise it the same way.
