Writers May Face Choice Between WGA, Agents in Franchise Pact Talks

Variety: The Writers Guild of America and the major talent agencies are seven weeks away from a deadline that could force film and TV writers to choose between their agents and their union. This is a battle that has been brewing for a year but few in the industry saw coming until a few weeks ago.

This article really dragged the Writers Guild of America through the mud. While I’m not sure I would join a union myself, I think that unions are present in our capitalist society for a good reason. It seems that the second a union decides to exercise its rights, everybody gets annoyed. However, what I think is also interesting is the relationship between Agents and writers. I’m not sure how I feel about the packaging fees versus the 10% commission. It sounds like the packaging fee has been apart of the industry for a long time, but that doesn't mean that the entertainment industry isn’t looking to change for the better. From the tone of the article, it feels as though this guild is attempting to undercut agents who bring these writers jobs and opportunities that they may not have had access to without these agencies assistance. I understand being apart of a guild and watching to protect a person’s rights, but this doesn’t feel like that.
