I have zero clue as to who will win this year’s Oscar for production design. The nominated films are all enormously successful and each so different than their competitors. I’m also incredibly happy that “Black Panther” has been nominated. This article was insightful into the arduous work that all of these production designers went through in the creation of all of these films. I really loved watching “The Favorite.” I felt like the production design of that film was really thoughtful in considering the period that it took place, but also using elements that the story needed to further the character’s stories and general plot. I was not frustrate by the lack of period inaccuracies because I felt like the film wasn’t trying to be periodically accurate, but it was trying to tell its story in the best way possible. I’m excited to watch the Oscars and see which of these films win for production design.
When watching each of these films on the big screen, I am fully enamored by how delicately and easily they are able to literally take us into a world of fantasy right after the opening sequence. What makes each of these films so unique within their production design and overall world creation is the element of it being relatable to audiences everywhere. For example, in Black Panther there is the strong presence of technology and the movie also thematically puts the fictional world of Wakanda within the realm of the already existing Marvel universe. It also relates the world to issues of Black Lives Matter and race relations within the world, which makes for a strong sense of starkness and reality to a world that is fantasy yet incredibly relatable to the audiences that watch the movies. I'm looking forward to watching the Oscars this year because I think that each of the movies nominated, whether it be Black Panther or Mary Poppins Returns, has a pretty equal chance at winning, its a hard year to be nominated.
It is really interesting to read about the ways in which they modified spaces to allow for certain tricks to happen. In film they have the opportunity to use CGI, which theater does not have. For example in "The Play that Goes Wrong" there are a lot of special effects that have to work the same every night, which is extremely difficult given the sheer size of some of the effects. In film, anything that supports the effect can be edited out in post which makes the editors job harder, but the movie is easier in the long run. It was interesting to get an inside look into a production designer's world and see just hoe complicated some effects can be. I think that there are a lot of really good movies nominated this year and all of them have spaces that were modified for filming and effects. I cannot wait to see what happens and who wins.
