Five and a half questions for new On the Boards artistic director Rachel Cook

The Seattle Times: On the Boards, Seattle’s premiere venue for onstage experimentation, has announced a new artistic director — Rachel Cook, coming from her job as curator at DiverseWorks, an art, performance and literary center in Houston. Cook, who starts in her new position Jan. 2, will be the fourth artistic director at On the Boards, replacing Lane Czaplinski, who left the theater for the Wexner Center for the Arts at Ohio State University in March.

I am glad that Cook wants to bring her own style, but not completely run over the existing Pacific Northwest style that exists in Chicago. My mother's family lives in Seattle, and has lived in Seattle the entire time they have been in the United States. Every time I have gone to visit them, I have never seen theatre or any other arts space, so I am not sure why I am mentioning them here. I think that it is really great that Seattle has an Arts organization dedicated to creating diverse art. The landscape for new art is changing as more and more diverse artists populate the space. It sometimes feels a little macabre to say that I cannot wait until the baby boomers' notions of race and diversity die with them, but man, some of them are so stuck in their "traditional" way that seems like the only change they will accept is change after they are dead. I do think the arts environment will be a more diverse place once the art makers are more forward minded.
