Podcast Episode 138- Kwame Kwei-Armah

The Producer's Perspective: From singer to songwriter to actor to award-winning playwright to Artistic Director, Kwame Kwei-Armah has done just about everything an artist can do in the theater already. And, given the accolades already bestowed on him (he’s been produced at the National, and in short order, he’ll assume the reins of the Young Vic in London), he’s done it all at a super high level.

I love that Mr. Kwei-Armah was unhappy with the amount of literature out in the world for black actors and audiences and so decided to write his own. I am happy, that in the wake of all these sexual abuse and harassment accusations, that we are filling the holes left in both our industry and in other affected industries with women, persons of color, and members of the LGBT+ community. Recently, the mayor of Seattle resigned due to sexual abuse allegations. Just a week ago, the next elected mayor of Seattle started the transition process: Jenny Durkan, the city's second openly LGBT+ mayor. Now Mr. Kwei-Armah is taking over Kevin Spacey's role at the Old Vic as artistic director. I also am happy putting some of my state pride in Mr. Kwei-Armah, even though he is from Baltimore and I am barely from Maryland anyway. I wish him all the luck in the world at his new post.
