Who Has Two Shows Running Off-Broadway Right Now?

Theatre Development Fund – TDF: For playwrights, having one show Off-Broadway is a thrill. But two plays running simultaneously at prestigious institutions like Manhattan Theatre Club and the Roundabout Theatre Company? Now that's a coup de théâtre.

I have never read or heard of Anna Zeigler’s work before now, but she sounds like a brilliant playwright and the works mentioned in this article really intrigue me, specifically her show “Actually” at the Manhattan Theater Club. The plot of the show sounds like it carries a lot of weight, tackling issues of gender, race, and consent. I’m curious about how these three things are juxtaposed—who is accused, what discussions do the characters have, how do they talk about this issue, and so on. I also appreciate that Zeigler says she had no preconceived messages she wished to portray in this show, that the characters say what they have to say and that’s that. I think shows like this that spark these kinds of conversations are really important right now, with all of the entertainment industry allegations coming out left and right and the issue of consent being something people are more aware of. I will definitely look out for Zeigler’s work in the coming years.

This is actually incredible feat to achieve. The first feat is to actually get your play produced in new York. The second is to have two shows running at the same time. she is truly breaking boundaries. I wonder when the last time someone had two off-broadway shows playing at the same time. Its nice to hear that when she was getting stressed she would take a pause from that show and go focus on the other one. It must have been difficult to go to all those meetings with theatres and discuss each show separately. She must be super organized. I do wonder if each play had an influence on the other since couples are involved with both. This is the first time I have heard of this playwright but with two off Broadway plays running she must be really great. I look forward to seeing her future work.
