Gal Gadot: It's Me or Brett Ratner, WB

The Mary Sue: According to a report in Page Six – a source which comes with a grain of salt – Gal Gadot is refusing to sign on for the Wonder Woman sequel until she knows that none of its profits will benefit Brett Ratner, whose RatPac Entertainment co-produced the first film. Ratner has been accused of sexual harassment by multiple women, accused of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old, and accused of outing Ellen Page by suggesting a woman “fuck her to make her realize she’s gay” on the set of X-Men: The Last Stand. And there are likely more allegations coming.

I hope Gadot’s leverage is enough to keep Ratner from making any money of Wonder Woman. It seems likely since they really can’t do the movie without her, so even if they have to push it, they still will. I also like the fact that she just so happens to be playing Wonder Woman. I hope that more women are in positions of power where they can put their foot down regarding the harassment that has been accepted in this film industry (as well as many other industries) for decades. I also hope men start putting their foot down as well, and start refusing to tolerate sexual harassment perpetrated by their coworkers. I do think Warner Brothers will find a way to remove all ties to Ratner, not only would they lose Gadot if they don’t, it would be terrible PR, and very obvious PR given that they’d have to either recast Wonder Woman or simply not make additional Wonder Woman movies, and neither of those things seem particularly beneficial for WB.

THIS IS WHAT A WOMAN IN A POSITION OF POWER LOOKS LIKE.

We have seen, over and over again, what happens when men are in positions of power and make requests. It is the reason why allegations are flying from every angle: because people in power get to make demands, and those people are often horny men. But this is what a woman in a position of power looks like! Gadot is able to make real change because she is in a position to. All too often, women want to make their industries better but aren't able to because they do not have the incredible power that so many men do. The bigger your voice is, the more likely you'll be heard. Gadot has a booming voice right now because she is the source of unbelievable income and public image for WB. She is using her status and influence to make a difference, and I love that.

I think Gal Gadot is making incredible use of her power and connection with the Wonder Woman franchise to speak out on issues, like the one of Brett Ratner. It would truly be impossible for another Wonder Woman film to be made in the near future without Gadot, and she knows that, and the people producing the film know that, which is what makes her statement so powerful. My only concern is if Warner Brothers will truly be able to sever all ties with Ratner (which they have claimed to do), because of how interwoven this industry is. Regardless of the outcome, Gadot’s stance has created waves within society and called out the people who allow the Ratners and Weinsteins of the world to slide by. I truly hope we will see more women in powerful positions, like Gadot’s, will take a strong stance against sexual harassment and show the industry that built them up, that they will not be put down or minimized by sexual harassment and assault.
