The Circle Then, The Circle Now: The Latinx Theatre Commons at Four Years
HowlRound: Four years ago, on Halloween night in 2013, nearly eighty Latinx actors, playwrights, directors, designers, producers, administrators, and scholars formed a grand circle in an empty theatre space at Boston’s Emerson College. In so doing, they commenced the first national convening of what we now know as the Latinx Theatre Commons (LTC). These Latinx theatremakers arrived from across the United States, taking time away from their work in not-for-profit, community-based, and academic theatre organizations, and from their endeavors as independent artists.

It was just last year that I first herd of Latinx Commons Group. After going to a short information session about it I, like the author of this article, wasn't quite sure what it was, but I knew that it was something that our community needed. Being a Hispanic participant in the entertainment industry, I had never herd of an organization that advocated for other Hispanic artists. In a world where diversity is becoming more and more of a focus, it is puzzling to me that the Hispanic population is still so under-represented. The three pillars of the Latinx Commons Group align very well with what the Latinx community in the arts needs. They need a group of similar others, who advocate for their work and connect the community. Overall, I think it is great that the Latinx group has continued to grow. I hope to be more of a part of this community.
