University Center Addition To Expand Fitness, Recreation Space
Faculty & Staff News - Carnegie Mellon University: Build it and they will come.
That's the recent history Carnegie Mellon is banking on as it enters the design phase for a $22 million, 45,000 square-foot University Center addition that will include enhanced fitness and recreation space, a black box theater for student performance groups and a new front door and lobby area facing Forbes Avenue.

Although it is exciting that CMU is adding another performance space on campus, I do not believe all the other additions are necessary. For example, a spinning studio with a video simulator for biking? It seems a little excessive and not the best use of funds. I would hope that our tuition money is not being used for this sort of campus improvement.
I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS NEW SPACE. As a former athlete, fitness is important to me and there are huge drawbacks to both the facilities that are currently available. There's the constant CMU question: are you a Skibo person or more of a UC person? Skibo is small, dirty, and smelly, but has better options when it comes to free weights... and often freedom of movement. The UC gym is often very crowded and insufficient when it comes to scope of exercises. This new addition will be great for the varsity athletes on campus who practice in the Varsity gym of Skibo because it will remove non-athletes from the area and hopefully stop frequent practice interruptions as people wander into the gym and must be kicked out due to the closed practices. Now these people who feel they have nowhere to go during these 4:30 to 6:30 practice times will have somewhere else to go, and everyone will be appeased. I am so grateful to the university for making fitness and athletics a priority; it is crucial to maintain a healthy body in order to secure a healthy mind.
