Pittsburgh Flugtag team looking to take flight in national competition
TribLIVE: The quirky homemade flying machines at Red Bull Flugtag events seldom fly once they're pushed off the platform.
Their captains would be lucky to get any aviation time at all.
“Some of them break apart, some fall down, some go sideways,” says Drew Haugh, 35, of New Brighton, who leads a local Red Bull Flugtag team.
But a team can hope, right?

The concept of this contest is incredible; combining charity and philanthropy with building a makeshift airplane? It doesn't seem possible for it to be much more awesome. But wait. This particular team is made up of workers at a gentleman's club, which just puts the icing on the cake. I would love to be involved in an event such as this, even just to see it take place, but also to be a part of the team that attempts to make an airplane. The spirit, the teamwork, and the creativity that would be needed for this project are perfect for theater people; maybe CMU can make its own team and participate next year.
I have always thought this competition was really really cool. I have always loved seeing the creative ways people fall off the ledge. I mean realistically, the likelihood of everyday people building a machine that can fly solely off the power of a human being is pretty small. But that being said, it is remarkable what people do and why they do it. I love the fact that this competition is a charitable one and I love to hear when people get together to raise money for a given cause. I agree with Emma. I think CMU should get together and try and make a team next year. Far too often we become too concerned with our own little world in Purnell, but I think that if we competed in this project, it would allow us to not only help other, but have a great team building and collaborative project to work on.
I am really amused by the idea of this competition. Although I am not sure why a gentlemans club is the group that is entering. I can't wait to learn more about the event and how it works, maybe we can make a team next year!
