The Dallas Morning News, looking for critics to boost its arts coverage, turns to local professors
Nieman Journalism Lab: The Dallas Morning News has been without a full-time staff art critic since 2006, so when it was announced last week that a professor from the University of Texas system had been hired to fill that position, people were excited — both because, hey, more critics are better than fewer critics, and because it seemed to point toward a new model for cooperation between academia and news organizations.

It's awesome that people are looking to expand their range of coverage and trying to improve on weaker areas. Hiring a local professor does seem like a solid solution, though I can't really speak for how it affects the rest of the journalism industry. I only wish this kind of professional input would extend to television news shows as well. It seems like more and more, there is little discernment in terms of fluff versus actual news content, and less and less fact-checking. News stations are often so concerned with views that they don't care if what they report is true or not -- which is extremely frustrating.
