Maker Faire NY 2013, Day One, in Pictures

Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories: Day one of the 2013 Maker Faire New York was incredible. We’ve nearly lost our voices after speaking with folks about our projects, all day long in the Atmel area of the Make:Electronics tent. However, we tag-teamed a bit and managed to take photos of many of the sights to see– costumes, robots, oodles of 3D printers, handmade furniture, mars rovers, UAVs, underwater ROVs, electronics, and so many other incredible projects. You can see the full photo set here.

Today in Olivier's Nose we spoke about craft fairs and about how we rarely find that the craft makers put themselves in their work. While looking at these pictures I felt like these people could accomplish what they made only by putting their interests fully their crafts. There were so many examples of things that looked like they grew from interest someone already had, like the floppy disk mp3's and the all-encompassing Mac box. What I particularly enjoyed was a sign that said "Ordinary people doing extraordinary things." I think that is where we as artists can see some of the best work, because we are seeing the earnest passions of everyday people.

The maker fair is truly an adult science fair. Gadgets and gizmos are infinite at the maker fair. People come up with all kind of crazy ideas and put them on display. The maker fair is full of Belle's father from Beauty and the Beast. The slightly off gentlemen who likes to tinker. There are some amazing things at the fair and then there are just alot of home made 3-d printers. It is a great thing for our industry to keep a eye on, because we never now what will come out of that fair.

This is really cool! I would be very interested in knowing if there was a version of this near Pittsburgh! It seems like many of the things that we build for theater would easily qualify as interesting or ingenious gadgets that could easily be presented at a convention or trade show if we werent so busy building the next show.

The Maker Faire is truly an enlightening experience. I was able to go last year and not only did I learn a lot, and see a ton of cool things and a lot of 3D printers, I had a lot of fun talking to some incredibly intelligent people and checking out a lot really neat booths. To answer Chris, there is a Pittsburgh Faire (http://pghmakerfaire.com/)
