I had not idea that the August Wilson Center was experiencing so much financial strain. Having been here on more than one occasion, and also having worked in the venue for a short time last winter, it was far from obvious that their debts were so immense. Everything seemed relatively new an well maintained. I think it's a shame that such a hub for cultural heritage in Pittsburgh is going to be shut down. Not only is it an informative museum and a widely used space for theatre and art, it also helps maintain the ideals of diversity in the Pittsburgh area. I hope that the center can somehow rebuild, even if it is not in the same space, so its many traditions may continue.
Last year for a class called "Revitalizing Pittsburgh" I wrote a paper having to do with the development of the Center, so I knew that from the beginning the August Wilson Center barely had the funds to open, let alone operate. I found this to be very upsetting since I loved the idea that Pittsburgh was using one of its own to celebrate an entire culture. In studying the center I saw that they offer installations, shows, classes and much more. It sounded as if many of these events came at little cost, and as sad as it is, I think they have no choice but to up their prices or start desperately asking for donations. Though it kind of juxtaposes the Center's mission, I'd hate see a place trying to deliver such a message close down.
