Stage preview: Tuskegee pilots play lands here Saturday

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Layon Gray chanced upon a televised event in 2007 that changed the course of his career. The actor, writer and director watched President George W. Bush award the Congressional Gold Medal to the African-American pilots known as the Tuskegee Airmen and was so moved he decided to write a play about them.

This play truly sounds like a work of art. I found it hard to believe there would be song and dance through a play with such a heart-wrenching message, but I am delighted to ready that the director was able to use song, dance, and story to not only entertain but touch many lives. I think that sometimes writing plays on true stories is a great way to share a message. I personally feel like I try to take in every detail when I've been told I'm watching something based on a true story, probably because I want to see how every nuance affects the storyline. I can only imagine that the storyline of this show is very powerful one.

I really wish I would have gotten the chance to see this play. The Tuskegee Airmen have such a great and inspirational story, and I would like to see how that would manifest on stage. There was a movie inspired by them not to long ago, but it failed to give the story the depth and realism it deserves. It seems that this play was able to transcend those boundaries, so Im happy that their message is truly making its way around the country.
