This change in the head of graduate directing is going to change a huge amount about CMU. Marianne's specific esthetic trickle down a lot to her students, the types of productions that we put on and the way in which we do those productions. I hope that we can find someone that is as prominent as Marianne because having the head of the builders association is a big selling point for the school. I for one think that it is a huge loss and that school culture will shift with the new person.
I agree with Zoe. I think the important thing though is that whoever comes into this position should be someone who, like Marianne, is moving her style along with the trends of today's theatre as they change. It is also interesting that directing is the only option where there are different option coordinators for graduate and undergraduate study, so it is all the more important that the person hired be willing to work with the rest of the program, while still bringing his/her unique style to the table. Marianne will be missed though!
Zoe and Shannon bring up many good points about this position. Whenever a faculty member at the School of Drama leaves or join it changes how the students and school focus on different works. As much as a loss of losing a faculty member is, it is always wonderful to see what the new one will bring. In an educational setting I feel that it is beneficial where there is turn around within schools. As Shannon stated, having the new trends of today and progressing is important in colleges. Hopefully this will be a good change, but we will always have Marianne to ask questions to if we need to down the line.
