Wakanda Forever

Style Weekly: Undoubtedly, you’ve seen her work. Carter’s long filmography includes costuming “Do the Right Thing,” “Malcolm X,” “Amistad,” “The Butler,” “Selma,” “Coming 2 America,” both “Black Panther” movies and the first season of “Yellowstone.” She is the first Black person to be nominated for an Oscar for costume design, the first to win in that category, and the only Black woman to have won two Oscars.

Ruth E. Carter is an OUTSTANDING designer and it’s been amazing to watch her finally get the recognition she deserves in recent years after decades in the industry. Carter’s collaboration with Spike Lee is really special—seeing the throughline of her designs throughout all of his movies (she designed costumes for Do The Right Thing, Mo’ Better Blues, School Daze, Jungle Fever, Malcolm X, and more) helps give his movies a clear sense of consistency and familiarity that tie them all together. It was interesting to see her different approaches to Coming to America 2 and the Black Panther movies. They were released within the same five years and, even though both are about wealthy, futuristic African nations (Wakanda and Zamunda), Carter is still able to give each one a unique style with its own motifs and touches. Her Oscar wins for Black Panther also make her the first and only black woman to have won two Academy Awards.
