New AI Protections Bill Not a 'Silver Bullet,' Top SAG-AFTRA Lawyer Says
www.thewrap.com: AI protections just signed into law by California Gov. Gavin Newsom aren’t a “silver bullet” that will solve all the problems of the rapidly advancing technology, said SAG-AFTRA’s general counsel Jeffrey Bennett at TheGrill conference this week.

The ‘web of protections’ that SAG-AFTRA general counsel Jeffrey Bennet refers to regarding local, state, and federal laws that the union is attempting to pass to protect performers from unauthorized usage of their likenesses is absolutely essential in an age of growing artificial intelligence. However, it isn’t a perfect solution. There are still ‘what-ifs’ and gray areas, especially surrounding the newest forms of this technology and its respective legislature (or lack thereof). The many interpretations of the First Amendment have caused for many decades of discussion (i.e. argument) regarding ownership and art. Thus, the arts of compromise and rhetoric come into play at this crux of a moment in time. Intellectual property is a key point of contention that Bennett finds pivotal in terms of accepting other compromises. The article makes an interesting point - post-strike, the fight continues to ensure actors are guaranteed consent, compensation, and agency - and isn’t it sad that we still have to argue that?
