AMERICAN THEATRE: In Salesman之死 (the complete text of which appears in our Fall 2024 issue), Jeremy Tiang portrays the famous Beijing premiere of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman through the lens of the Chinese actors, and in particular the show’s interpreter, Shen HuiHui. He spoke recently about Salesman之死 with Shayok Misha Chowdhury, whose play Public Obscenities was a multilingual hit in 2023.

A few years ago, I had the chance to see a production of Death of a Salesman in Shanghai. In China, there are many production companies that stage adaptations of European and American plays. However, it’s rare to see production companies or theaters outside of Asia actively introduce works from the region. Salesman之死 is one of those rare and valuable instances of such cross-cultural exchange. Whether it's producing works in a native language through rights acquisition or sharing original performances on international tours, these opportunities foster essential cultural exchange. The play not only highlights the impact of cultural interaction but also introduces complex political themes, underscoring how theater plays a significant and transformative role in shaping societal discussions. This belief in theater's power to communicate ideas and bridge cultural divides is why I am passionate about contributing to diverse theatrical productions and sharing meaningful narratives with audiences.
