How Creature Approached Mixed Reality Design Challenges With Starship Home

www.uploadvr.com: It's been nearly one year since Quest 3 launched, and while it's gone a long way in pushing the idea, mixed reality remains a highly experimental field. We've seen some strong examples making the case for MR gaming, like Demeo and the upcoming Laser Dance. However, much of the early wave of MR modes feel like add-ons for VR games that never intended to use this.

The beauty of this innovation lies in the simplicity of allowing new things to be added into the existing world instead of transforming the world entirely. Instead of simply putting a generic overlay, it leaves the intricacies of space curation to the user. I think that this space customization feature has real promise in home design spaces or in theaters. Imagine being able to put on a headset and drag and drop 3d renders into a space, instantly seeing an accurate representation of the set and gaining the ability to make changes to the design so that it fits together in the real world before it's built. These could also interact with costumes or lighting set ups. The possibilities are very cool and I'm excited to see how this tech can be used in the theater industry in the future.

I like that the idea was to have something “that would only make sense in a mixed reality”. The key to using technology is that it needs to feel like it adds to the experience, and that something would be missing without it. Mixed reality feels much more immersive than regular VR. The real world and the digital world are colliding and interacting. It’s much more than going into the digital world, it brings the digital world to the real world.
The design process for a game like this is intense, and sounds like there were a lot of constraints that needed to be considered. I’ve never played this game, but now I really want to! Based on the pictures and the article, it sounds like– after a lot of trial and error– they managed to accommodate for all the limitations. I’m super interested to see how they were able to do that and try it out.
