Montreal Jazz Festival 2024 Was a Blueprint for Fixing Fests

consequence.net: In the dimly lit back bar of a venue on Saint-Catherine Street, a woman wearing a short, all-white dress and a veil is absolutely wailing on a stand up bass. Marie-Ketely Abellard, wife and collaborator of Montreal-born jazz virtuoso Théo Abellard, is stealing the show a bit, but her pianist and composer husband doesn’t seem to mind. The pair playfully trade improvisations throughout the set, while drummer Tyson Jackson nimbly picks through beat pockets and solos behind them, rounding out the jazz trio.

“Founded as a non-profit back in 1980, Jazz Fest has a totally different objective than modern festivals: the goal here is simply to celebrate music, not make a buck.” This article was incredibly interesting to read as someone who is so interested in festivals, festival flow, and festival management. I was intrigued to read that many of the shows are free and crowded, but are a chance to bond and connect with the community. It reminded me of Playground and the space that has been created for the past 21 years, and my hope to continue it for more. Reading the way that this article describesThe community that is built over a cities love for jazz music and Simply Having Fun was so heartwarming and makes me honestly want to make my way out to Montreal to watch one of these shows.
