Colleen Atwood to Receive Variety's Creative Impact Award
variety.com: “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” costume designer Colleen Atwood will be honored with Variety’s Creative Impact in Costume Design award at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival.
I have been a fan of Colleen Atwood’s work long before I knew of her existence. I watched Little Women (1994) when I was in middle school and was absolutely enamored with the bonnets, mainly because I had never worn one before, but also because there were so many different colors, fabrics, and decorations on them. As I grew up and began paying more attention to the costume industry, I realized that Atwood designed the costumes in the Fantastic Beasts series, which I thought had some really lovely designs. I haven’t seen any of the other films Atwood has worked on, but I am interested in checking them out. I find that I enjoy a film more when the costumes are above and beyond, even if the film itself is not my favorite.
I think it’s fantastic that Atwood is being recognized for her achievements, and that it coincides with such a large, energetic celebration of costume design. I only wish it was closer to Pittsburgh so that I could attend.
I don’t think there is anyone more deserving of this award than Coleen. From what I’ve seen in little snippets of the show her work looks fantastic, the detail is impeccable. The amount of research put into the designs is apparent in her work on the show. It's clear she had a fantastic ability to work with Tim Burton and bring his visions to life in his other works like Sweeney Todd, Edward Scissorhands, and even Wednesday. The way the costumes can show how the characters have changed while still paying homage to their original designs is lovely to see. I absolutely love to look for the little details in each character finding little easter eggs. Overall I think she’s very deserving of this award from SCAD, and I can’t wait to see what she continues to work on in the future. I absolutely will be seeing Beetlejuice Beetlejuice when I get the opportunity.
