A tapestry workshop in Czechia
The Dreamstress: In the town of Valašské Meziříčí in the Zlín Region of Czechia there is a gem I almost missed seeing, but which turned out to be a highlight of the trip: the Moravská gobelínová manufaktura (MGM). MGM is Czechia’s oldest tapestry workshop, and one of the few working tapestry makers left in Europe.

There's something so lovely about seeing people keep the art of making tedious projects by hand like these alive. As a lover of cross stitch, I know that making a project like these rugs and tapestries are not only labors of love for the craft but vital in keeping the traditions and history of it all alive. The fact that all of their yarn is dyed by hand, and theyre creating off of patterns and making each stitch and knot with their own hands is amazing. With new equipment like knitting machines and rug tufting guns theres been a surge of a younger audience taking on these projects but in ways that finish them so quickly they can churn out finished project after project. Doing things the original way takes so much longer but keeps the origins of the craft intake, and forces the creator to slow down. It can be theraputic to sit and make thousands of stitches over and over, even if there is a faster way.
