The Oscars Just Added a New Category for the First Time in Over 20 Years
The Mary Sue: Today, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced the addition of a new awards category: Achievement in Casting. It’s the first new Oscars category since 2001, when the Academy introduced Best Animated Feature Film (that Oscar went to Shrek).

Wow, this is so exciting! I feel like casting is a really important part of making a film, and it is something that needs to be celebrated when done well. Especially now, there have been a lot of recent issues with casting, and this can be a great way to recognize and support films that include diversity in their casting choices and make sure to put people in appropriate roles. Casting often can make or break a film, and I am so happy that there is another category being created to awkward more people on the production side of things. I am definitely looking forward to this new category, and I can’t wait to see it incorporated into the awards ceremony in 2026. I’m just sad that is not happening sooner. It is also interesting to hear about the 2018 inclusion of a category for most “popular” movie. I had no idea that it used to be a category, but it is quite clear as to why it did not stick around.
I am so here for this. I mean I can honestly think of so many times where I have said “This is amazing casting”. Like I just couldn’t imagine anyone else playing the character I currently see in front of me. I think it's so interesting that there are so many different careers that aren't recognized, like the fact that stunt doubles do not have a category within the Oscars. And while I cannot personally wait for more things to be recognized I think this is a great start. Casting directors are an integral part of a production. They may not do the acting or the directing but they seek out and search for the faces we know and love. They think about two people's chemistry and see how they mix together and play such an important role in creating the stories we love. I am really looking forward to seeing these people recognized for their work
This is so exciting!!! I absolutely love watching movies when the cast seems to fit their roles so perfectly. I am very glad that there is more representation in terms of non-performance awards within major award shows. This award also intrigues me as I am somewhat interested in casting, however I have no idea how to get into that industry or how it works at all. I did not know that there hasnt been a new category introduced since 2001 which seems wild that in the past year two major award shows have introduced two new categories. I also didnt know that there is a documentary on casting. I really want to watch it and probably will tomorrow. I also think that like the article said, it is a good sign for stunt performers that casting is getting an award, it shows progress within an industry where progress tends to be slow.
And admit that I thought this was already a category of awards. It just makes sense. It takes a lot to get it casting perfect, especially when you're doing something that already has a large fan base, like a book adaptation. I know that the Emmys had something similar for certain types of television, so I assumed that the Oscars had something like this too. I think that it's about time that the Oscars started acknowledging this type of work. I'm really excited to see the movies and people who get nominated for this work, because it's really interesting to learn about the type of stuff that goes into casting for me. Furthermore, I always love when movies are cast well, and this gives me a great way to find a short list of some of the best cast movies of the year. I'm curious to see what type of methodology they use to determine what the best casting of the year was as well.
I don’t really keep up with the Oscars because I don’t watch enough movies to know what they're talking about for most of the award show but I still thought that this article was interesting. I’m surprised that there hasn’t been a new Oscar category in 20 years. As the industry is changing, I think it’s important that these awards change with it because there’s a lot of things we do today that were not considered the norm back then. I think having an achievement and casting category is really smart and really relevant to the industry today. Casting is such a complex thing and it can be done very wrong, resulting in iit being very hurtful to different communities. Underrepresentation of minority groups in the entertainment industry is a big issue and I’m glad that this award will recognize the people who are moving forward with effective conscious casting.
This is so exciting for casting directors, I’m so happy they’re now getting recognized. I’m honestly shocked there wasn’t a casting category already, it seems such an important role that it not being recognized is surprising, but I guess no better time like the present. I was also unaware that the Golden Globes added a box office/“popular” category, as I feel there are so many movies that are delightful and so many people love, for example MARVEL or other cinematic franchises that aren’t recognized at awards shows, as they don’t fit the box of the classic proper film categories, even though they may have been some of the most popular public films of the year. Making a good/well done film I think is important and should be recognized, but so should be making a film that brings joy to people, and if so many people go to see a movie for the fun of it, maybe the impact of that movie should be recognized? Overall I’m super excited that they’ve added these two new categories, and I’m interested in learning more about the casting directors who may get recognized in the future!
This is a super exciting addition to the Oscars! Casting is so important, and while I’ve never seen Casting By - the film they mention in the article, Every Little Step is one of my favorite films that highlights casting in the theatrical sense. It's a personal and difficult process; the casting director is both deciding people’s careers and how to make a film successful. I’m curious if this category will help illuminate the nuances of the casting process. I know little about film casting and while actors aren’t “gifted” parts, there is an interesting balance between box office success and talent. Additionally, I’m curious how this award will be distributed. Casting firms are a huge part of the process. Will the entire firm be given the award or the highest level casting director whose name is specifically on the credit? Both make sense, but it would be great if casting assistants were also recognized alongside the top agents.
I actually first heard about this on the instagram of a nonbinary actor who refuses to accept any award show nomination due to the lack of a category that fits their gender identity. They reposted this saying how happy they were and how this is proof that awards shows are always changing and can be updated. I’m not sure how I feel about having a nonbinary category in awards shows. I don’t think we have enough nonbinary mainstream actors yet for a nonbinary category. Hopefully there will be enough enby people in the future. I don’t think we should eliminate gendered categories at awards shows. If we do, women will be grossly underrepresented. We are not at a place where women and mens talent is treated equally and thus we are not at a point where we no longer need gendered categories. I digress. I’m really excited about this nomination. I definitely think casting is a great Oscar category.
