I love looking into new tools and seeing what applications they have in our industry. Although there are things like grass cutters and other tools that do not have much of an application in theater there are some tools mentioned in this article that I think could be incredibly useful in our world. The first tool that caught my eye was Milwaukee's wireless dust collector/shop vac. I can only imagine the uses for this tool during load in or other scenarios when outlets are not easily accessible. Another tool that caught my eye was Skils USB-C batteries. Power tools chargers are often bulky taking up more space than the battery itself. Although USB-C chargers don't fix every issue when it comes to charging batteries they do cut down on the amount of gear that is required during load in. I hope these invitations creep their way into CMU and the theater world as a whole throughout the next couple of years.
I don’t know why I clicked on this as I really don’t care about tools. I mean I do care about tools but not enough to justify writing a whole news quiz about it. I guess I'm already committed to the bit so I’ll write about tools. I also suppose it is good to know what the best tools are even though I will definitely never buy the highest quality tools for myself. I thought the portable power station was really interesting. I never knew that was a thing. I can see why it would be really useful. I can’t believe it is seven hundred eighty dollars. That feels like too much but I guess I don’t know much about what’s actually in a portable battery. I also found the laser level to be really interesting. I kind of assumed laser levels couldn’t get “better.” It’s just a laser level, I’m not sure how much you can really approve upon it.
I always like to give articles like these a silly little peruse, simply because sometimes they're really interesting. I am not really a tools person by any means, meaning that I usually just like to get whatever is cheapest that will get the job done well. I understand that better tools can do better things, but often I find that the trade-off isn't worth it exactly to pay the premium price for the premium results. I guess I'm also a little curious as to what exactly constitutes the best power tool of 2023. I understand the specs and the design, and all of those factors. but with power tools, I find that so many of the power tools have pretty damn similar designs. Is it just vibes? How much do personal preferences and personal biases factor into these lists? I understand the power tools often have very loyal fan bases who prefer that brand of power tools over others. All this being said, however, I am really excited for the fact that power tools with usb-c chargers made the list, As I think that will really be a true gamechanger that I hope a lot of other companies implement.
