Workers at Vancouver's WildBrain animation studio look to unionize

CBC News: Staff at WildBrain's Vancouver studio, the animation studio behind well-known animation properties such as Snoopy TV, Johnny Test and Sonic Prime, are looking to join a small but growing list of studios in the province that are part of the Canadian Animation Guild, Local 938 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE).

Every place that unionizes right now is just one more step to unions having more power. With WGA and SAG-AFTRA on strike right now companies are worried that if they concede then this will set a precedent for giving workers proper pay when they ask for it. This is scary to them because the last big change to how people view unions was when Reagan made striking workers out to be lazy and set a long precedent of union busting. The companies fear this will be the thing to undo that, and they’re right. Already we’ve seen many other unions go on strike either for their own wages or just in solidarity in large part because of the support WGA and SAG-AFTRA have already received. Seeing this impact spread to other countries is huge because it means that the companies don’t have long left and likely we’ll see them agree to almost all if not all of the demands realizing that letting the strike go on for longer is inspiring more and more unions the longer they wait.

Unionizing is an important statement to make in a time like now. It is becoming more and more recognized that there is a problem with the standards of living in the fields of film theater and art in general. WGA and SAG-AFTRA are on strike and it is creating a movement. With every revolution, especially in art, there are risks taken and risks that need to be taken to make a real noticeable change within the industry. It may even change the kind of art produced. I wonder if it will, or will it still be a struggle for artists not getting what they deserve? Whatever it is, the risk will provoke some emotion for people to create new art and justice.
