Review Roundup: IS THIS A ROOM Opens On Broadway!
www.broadwayworld.com: This Is A Room is the astonishingly true story of Reality Winner, the 25-year-old former Air Force intelligence specialist who was surprised at her home by the FBI on June 3, 2017. The play's text is taken from the FBI transcript of her interrogation - and from these pages, Tina Satter has wrought an extraordinary human drama between Reality (Emily Davis) and the agents who question her. In this theatrical thriller, Reality's life is upended before our eyes, and we're left questioning American values and the very nature of the truth.

I am not sure if I am far removed from Broadway because I have obviously not seen a production in a while. Given our current reopening situation, I hope to see some shows soon. This is the first I am hearing of this production. I think “Is This A Room” sounds so thrilling, and I hope to be able to see it. I am particularly curious in the design and redefinition of the space. The last time I saw a production at the Lyceum Theatre in New York, I was seeing “Be More Chill”. The set for that production was massive, and it seems as though this production would be more intimate. I remember the theatre being a beautiful space, but again I am just curious how the few number of actors fill the space. The answer to this most likely lies in their performances. The reviews are fantastic, and this production will definitely be on my list of must see productions.
With the reopening of Broadway after the Covid-19 shutdown, I am interested to see how this will affect the opening of new productions. Shows that are reopening already have a fanbase, so people are more likely to feel comfortable or motivated to see the show. However, new shows are much more up in the air. Air travel is much less normalized now, so actually making the trip to New York for theatre will seem much more valuable if you are seeing a show you already know you like / are familiar with. I think it will be harder to gage audience interest, as people have been less engaged in theatre as the entire industry was shut down. I also believe reviews (like this one) will prove to be more important and influential on a production's lifespan now than ever. It will be one of the main ways audience's will gage if a production is worth their time, ESPECIALLY when if Theatre is worth it in general is up in the air for audience members right now.
