7 Ways to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at a Theatre Near You

Playbill: Hispanic Heritage Month is already underway (it begins September 15 to commemorate the start of the Mexican War of Independence and ends October 15) with plenty of theatres around America honoring the work of Latine playwrights, performers, directors, and creative artists working in the industry.

As a member of the Mexican Latinx Community, this article spoke to me as it is Hispanic Heritage Month. Right off the bat, the line “it begins September 15th to commemorate the start of the Mexican War” was shocking to me– in a good way. I spoke a little about this the other day with some friends, but the idea of “Cinco de Mayo” being the Mexican Independence day is outright erroneous. As is indicated by the article, Mexican Independence day is September 15th. So, while minuscule of detail, I was glad to see an accurate timeframe reference in events of major significance to Mexican Culture. In terms of the actual context of the article, I’m glad I had the opportunity to read it. While the CMU fence was painted to commemorate the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, I struggled to find ways/opportunities to celebrate. Now, I’m looking forward to trying some of these out during the weekend.
