The Macy's Flower Show is back and better than ever this year
www.timeout.com/newyork: Usually heralding the impending arrival of summer, the annual Macy's Flower Show is as defining of New York as bagels and rooftop bars are. Although last year's show was understandably cancelled, we're here to report that 2021's iteration of the event is officially happening. Beginning May 2 through May 16, New Yorkers will get to walk through a plethora of magical flowers at Macy's flagship store in Herald Square.

It is really great to see that the Macy’s Flower Show is back this year and I am really excited to see pictures from it! I have never been to the Macy’s Flower Show, but I have seen pictures and I am always blown away by how amazing the exhibit is. There is something so inherently delicate about flowers and to see them turned into these large and magnificent displays is so amazing. I think art with flowers is really unique and honestly I can not even fathom how challenging it would be to make anything even remotely similar to this. Something that I would imagine to be extremely logistically challenging is maintaining the freshness of the flowers long enough to construct these displays and then to have them on display. I can not imagine how much planning must go into an event like this and I am really excited to see some pictures from it this year!
I must have been living under a rock. How have I never heard of The Macy’s Flower Show?! I absolutely love events like this and floral art. I grew up walking to the rose parade every year to see these amazing floats covered in thousands of beautiful flowers. I also did my Guess Who project on Azuma Makoto, a brilliant flower artist based in Japan. So, I have so much respect for the art and the artists. Anyways, I’m so glad that the show is back for 2021 with specific COVID precautions especially after it was cancelled in 2020. The theme “Give. Love. Bloom” is exactly what we need right now to give people a sense of joy and hope after such a rough year. Looking at the pictures from 2019, I am just imagining how amazing it must have been to see them in person and also smell all of the floral arrangements.
Megan, I must have been under the same rock as you because I have also never heard of this beautiful exhibition. Macy’s advertising department is really slacking because I absolutely would have paid Macy’s a visit had I known. I wonder how many designers they got to work on this project in the past, because the pictures seem to cover a lot of ground from flower fashion, to sculpture, to classic arrangements, to flower mosaics. What a cool way to marry a unique medium with different types of art. I know Macy’s is probably not experiencing much of a financial strain during the pandemic but it is still a bit of a nice surprise to see a huge corporation give resources to such a frivolous art project even in such a dire time. What a lovely way to brighten a new yorker’s day and a clever tactic to get them into your store!
