The Frick Pittsburgh partners with vanessa german for multi-year art project

Visual Art | Pittsburgh | Pittsburgh City Paper: The Frick Pittsburgh has partnered with one of the city's most prominent artists for a multi-year project that includes powerful new work, events, and more. The museum and historical space announced that it will embark on a visiting artist partnership with local artist, poet, and activist vanessa german. Over the course of three years, german will create what is described in a press release as “a community-centered body of art exploring the transformative power of love using the Frick’s site as a departure point.”

This is wonderful! I don’t know Vanessa German but she was named Pittsburgh’s most talented artist and poet so she must deserve this. It’s such and honor to get that kind of support from a museum. It’s a dream. What really touched me was that when her art pieces burned down in another museum, people raised 123,000 dollars for her so you know her art and poetry must be very impactful to draw that kind of support. Her first interactive sculpture opened on March 17th so I am planning on going sometime soon to see it. I love that a museum that has mostly Renaissance period paintings would feature a contemporary artist and it’s one of the museums that I haven’t gone to yet so I’m very excited.

I congratulate Vanessa German for getting to a point in her career where this opportunity opens up and is using it to spread awareness on social issues she cares about. More so, it makes me hopeful that the Frick – a museum I have, admittedly, been meaning to check out for several months now – is giving this space to diverse voices. I also noticed that some of her credits are in pieces for the community, which I just generally think is really interesting. I’m sure this will make for a great event, as I saw at the end it will be more of a collaborative presentation instead of just a solo piece. I admire German for being able to pick herself up and keep going, knowing that life just keeps going especially after the fire. I feel hopeful for her future, and am very happy her GoFundMe was able to pay for some of the damages.

First off, I had no idea that there was a Frick museum here in Pittsburgh and so close to my home. Susan mentioned the story of the Frick families decision not to have their main collection on display here in Pittsburgh because of an argument with the city, and decided to host the Frick collection in New York Cities 5th Avenue Museum Mile. I used to always walk by the Frick collection and had no idea what it was, so I can wait to cvist the Frick museum here and the Frick collection back home. Now I am so happy that i read this article because it also exposed me to the work of artist Vanessa German. She is an incredicle artist and poet and it was very sad to hear that her work had burned down. I am so exited that the museum has announced such a large and long partnership with her over the course of years. I am so excited to go check out the work that she is created, and I am really grateful of the topics she chose to explore, especially the reckoning with the countless deaths of Black citizens killed at the hands of police.
