What a Year: Looking Back and Looking Ahead

www.flyhouse.com: On March 20, 2020, the state of Illinois declared a “Stay at Home” order. Just four days later, on March 24, we debuted our first Flyhouse Online Training course. At the time, Flyhouse had two exciting live classes planned for April: a public class in California at a wire rope vendor’s shop, and a class with Local 10 in Buffalo to train high steel riggers. We were excited about both and really disappointed to cancel. Our cruise ship clients were also shutting down and we quickly realized that life was changing in a big way. We made the call to pivot to online learning.

This year has kinda been crazy for me as it has for everyone else in the world. My state issued its shut down March 12th 2020 (which just so happened to be my birthday) so I woke up the day I was supposedly to become an adult and was super excited to have school canceled for 2 weeks. I did not even realize how big this virus was going to become and that I was also going to turn 19 in this pandemic as well. Having an entire year to focus on myself and not have to go to school definitely changed me. This past year I did anything possible to try to learn new skills or hone into the ones I already had. I think the addition of online classes especially for theatre has definitely increased the accessibility of theater but also provided skills that could just be used around the house. This past year I learned how to sew and then was able to tailor my wardrobe to myself. This theater having flying and rigging classes is something that I would be interested in but now that college has started I can't seem to find the time that I did in the beginning of quarantine. It is weird but I can't help but miss the beginning of quarantine. I am happy this virus is finally coming to an end though because the in between is killing me.

I'm not sure if the article answered this for me, but if they only began coordinating and putting together their online curricula since the pandemic began a year ago it is staggeringly impressive how many courses they offer now. I feel like theatre is one of those fields where the information is out there but oftentimes young people don't know where to look. Somewhere like this which gives anyone access to this information, some free and some for a price, is such a useful and probably underutilized resource. I don't have a background or really a need to train in rigging but now I'm interested in taking a few of the free courses this summer...or whenever I have free time to dedicate. Online learning for skills such as these that can be hard to locate are s beneficial and it's exciting to see they intend to make it a permanent feature. In particular, these kinds of resources would be great for kids in hs theatre that may not have the access to the technical knowledge they wish they did.
