Galup Theatrical Walking Tour Recalls the Dancing and Violence of the Colonial Encounter

The Theatre Times: Galup is a “theatricalized” walking tour created by Ian Wilkes and Poppy van Oorde-Grainger. The artists’ aim is truth-telling, to restore memories of the First Australians and their early contact with white settlers beside Lake Monger, Perth. Tales of hunting, of spear throwing, of Noongar warrior Yagan, and of visitors from distant Aboriginal lands have been told before, but are not well known.

What an interesting and impressive project this is! I think there is something so thrilling about a performance based walking tour, and it is even cooler that it is also interactive with the audience. Over winter break I went on a performance walking tour at a historical site and I think it offers a really great way to learn about the history of a place not just from reading a pamphlet, but being immersed in the history in a totally different way. It is excellent to see that this specific tour is telling Aboriginal stories. At the beginning of the article, the writer discusses the goals of Ian Wilkes and Poppy van Oorde-Grainger as being focused on accurately telling the story of the First Australians and their interactions with white colonizers. Australia has a colonization history not dissimilar to that of the United States and it is promising to see that there is an avenue for addressing the truth of colonization.
