New York City Comptroller calls for vaccination of theater workers

Broadway News: New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer has joined the calls to expand vaccine eligibility to members of the theater industry. In a letter sent to New York Gov. Cuomo and Health Commissioner Howard Zucker Friday, Stringer urged the state to prioritize theater and entertainment workers for vaccination, particularly as venues begin to reopen at reduced capacities in April.

This would be amazing if it were possible. Sadly, I feel a little bit skeptical that it would mean a much quicker return to live theatre. Setting aside the fact that there is already not enough vaccine to go around, and many people who are at high risk for COVID still have not been able to get it, “theatre workers” make up such a sprawling demographic. If Stringer truly means everyone involved in the reopening of theatres, that is likely thousands of people. From people working in all the shops, actors, management, craftspersons, etc. there is no way a vaccine could be distributed to all of them by the time theatres are set to partially re-open.
I am of the mindset of “a vaccine for one is a vaccine for all” But I feel like to make this plan feasible you would need to designate a certain number of shots specifically for theatre workers, therefore basically taking shots away from the general eligible public. I’m not saying its not a noble thing to do, I just think it should be considered carefully.
