And Then Oscar Came Calling ... Three Nods for CMU Alumni

Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama: Two Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama alumni were nominated for three awards by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Monday, March 15. The 2021 Oscar nominations heralded Leslie Odom, Jr.’s performance for Actor in a Supporting Role as Sam Cooke in “One Night in Miami” and Original Song for “Speak Now.” Legendary costume designer Ann Roth was nominated for her work in the Costume Design category for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” It would be Roth’s second Oscar; this would be Odom, Jr.’s first.

I watched One Night in Miami the day it came out and really enjoyed the movie. I have never heard of the “EGOT” and hopefully, the success of Odem Jr. continues. It’s really thrilling to hear about the accomplishments of CMU alumni and be able to think, maybe that could be my classmates one day or even me. This year I think I’ve lost touch with theater and the joy that is behind it (it's tough when the theater has gone dark) but to see that people are still creating and continuing to be rewarded for their work is really refreshing. There are many things we have missed out on this year due to the pandemic so hopefully, these two Alumni can pull in this Oscars and bring a little CMU pride to the awards this year. Movies and film seem to be fairing much better than the theater industry during COVID times and it is nice to see these two Alums working in that realm during the pandemic
