Actors' Equity responds to petition on theater reopenings

Broadway News: Actors’ Equity has pledged to host a town hall in response to union members calling for clarity on reopening protocols. In a Medium post published this past weekend, Equity said it would address member concerns about updating safety protocols, while also pointing to rising COVID-19 rates in New York and New Jersey and a largely unvaccinated workforce.

Although I do think that clear reopening protocols are important, we are still pretty unclear as to when we will be able to really open up theatres again. It would probably be better to wait until we can have a set date to open our theatres to create protocols instead of creating them now. Once we are ready to open, the protocols that we make now could drastically change from the ones that we will need in the future. It would definitely be a waste of time for Actors’ Equity to start researching these protocols when they should be focusing on when they will be allowed to reopen and if other theatre unions will reopen with them. Plus, once it even is safe, there will still need to be rehearsals for the actors and run crew to practice the show and even some recasting to do. None of this will really be safe until it is safe for us to reopen theatres again. Hopefully sometime soon we will get a specific date but I think overall Actor’s Equity is doing the right thing.
