The Case for a New Federal Theater Project
Variety: The $15 billion Shuttered Venue Operators Grant — the federal program formerly known as Save Our Stages — isn’t exactly a new Federal Theater Project. But according to Nataki Garrett, the arts leader who has become one of the country’s most vocal advocates for government support of the theater sector, the SVOG represents a dawning bipartisan realization of just how important the arts are to the health of the nation’s economy.

It's interesting to look back on politics from 2021 with the view we have now, in 2025. This article talks about advocacy for more arts funding, through the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant (Save Our Stages.) The article emphasizes how quarantine has impacted the arts- with theatre growing into the “digital realm,” and shutting down jobs in physical theatre.
The Shuttered Venue Operators Grant no longer accepts applications. In fact, as of June 1st, 2025, the Grant is demanding repayment. In a new article, it is revealed that 30 days are given to repay “100% of whatever funding [was] received.”

Its hard to hear that the situation has seemingly worsened. The issues brought on by COVID- unemployment and lowered support for the arts- are still impacting us today. I feel for those in the theatre industry that are directly facing problems from the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant. I hope there will soon be better news about financial help.
