New York cinemas reopen, brightening outlook for theaters

Why do movie theaters need to open? I genuinely don’t understand. They seem like maybe the ONLY business where 98% of the experience can be replicated safely at home. A movie theater filled with 50 strangers honestly sounds like one of the last places I would want to be during a pandemic. Especially since I can probably watch the movie and pop my own popcorn at home for much less money. I’m curious if going to the movies is such a cultural staple that people will still go even before the pandemic ends. People must have some sentimental attachment to a movie theater that I simply do not have. All of this is not to say, however, that I am not happy for these business owners who can finally get some cash flow. It's great that they can finally have some semblance of security again! I just wish they could have received some aid so they didn't have to open back up prematurely to stay in business.
