LightSoundJournal.com: Audinate’s Dante, the de facto standard for digital audio networking, recently reached an impressive milestone with more than 3,000 different products now incorporating Dante for audio-over-IP connectivity. According to research from RH Consulting, 3,034 Dante-enabled devices are available from 361 different manufacturers as of January 2021. The data from RH Consulting indicates Dante is the protocol of choice in more than 91 percent of the networked audio products currently on the market.

Dante is really an impressive protocol. Its ability to connect over IP with minimal latency and a single Ethernet cable makes it an obvious choice for audio in theatre. I’m glad it is becoming the standard in theatrical sound design.
In high school, I took the level 1 certification provided by Audinate for Dante, and found it really helpful in understanding the product. In my high school, we only used Dante to connect our mixer to our main speakers. However, Dante shines in larger systems with many inputs and outputs. I’d love to work in a theatre that uses Dante more. But I also recognize that as the signal chain grows, it becomes more complex. Even in my small theatre, I was learning about the networking conditions that allowed devices to connect- Bit Depth, Sample Rate, etc. On a large system, I think any configuration issues could be frustrating to resolve. Ultimately, a small price to pay for good audio.
