Aspen Santa Fe Ballet dissolves company amid coronavirus losses

theknow.denverpost.com: Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, one of the country’s most acclaimed mid-sized dance companies, is permanently shuttering its performance and touring company, officials said Monday. “Like every dance company in the country, we were already facing challenges pre-COVID,” said Jean-Philippe Malaty, executive director of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet.

It is so tragic to hear stories of these companies beginning to have to shutter themselves permanently. I mean, it was fairly easy to see coming given the current state of the world, but it still hurts to see it actually happening here and there. Many of the places I have seen having to permanently shut down have similar stories – they may or may not have been struggling already going into the pandemic, and then the pandemic hit and their death certificate was basically signed and sealed. Some just shut down immediately, others made attempts to find alternative forms of performance or fundraisers, but in a lot of cases, it simply was not enough. It is especially hard because performing arts venues usually struggle to make ends meet as is, but also the live entertainment industry was one of the hardest hit as is, because it will be one of the last industries to reopen. My heart truly goes out to all the performers, designers, and other staff who have been displaced from their jobs in the past years, and to all the theatres and other performance venues that have had to permanently shut their doors.
