Irish Cinema Chain Introduces ‘Seat Separation’ to Combat Coronavirus
Variety: Northern Ireland’s biggest movie theater chain has introduced a mandatory “seat separation” policy, along with other measures intended to counter the growing spread of the coronavirus.

I am glad this cinema is finding a way to stay open, at least for now. With so much closing all over the world, it does make me happy to see the changes that some companies are making to keep their doors open. I am seeing a show at a black box tonight in Seattle where they have set up the seats in such a way that they are all six feet apart from each other and they are only selling a limited number of seats to people by invite only from the cast. I am glad that places are finding a way to keep the arts alive in this crazy time. I am not sure how long these places will be able to stay open with how fast everything is happening and how many countries are just shutting down, but for now, it makes me happy to see the arts still alive. Everything just feels so unreal right now. Like it is crazy that pretty much every article on here is in some way about the same virus...
This is a really great idea, although I have seen other movie theaters separating people to one person every 3 seats, which seems safer to me. It does worry me that they also kind of brush over the cleaning practices part of their plan because that is such an important part of keeping people safe. This is definitely effective as a way of keeping movie theaters operational, but it does also kind of set a dangerous precedent for how far people are willing to go to keep their lives functioning "as normal". Personally, I would rather live for a smaller amount of time with slightly greater constrictions on what I can do or where I can go than to have more freedom and have this persist for longer. For instance, a few weeks ago Italy was at a similar point to where a lot of America is right now, and now Italy is on full lockdown. Of course, their is no way to know for sure that trying to be more careful for a bit will prevent us to getting to that point, which is why I guess I can also get behind trying to stay safe while also enjoying the freedom we still have.
Yesterday I went to the movies and not a single person was in the theatre besides my mom and I. My dad was worried about us going but when we told him it was empty he was both surprised and entirely understanding. I've heard of many venues that are employing social distancing practices before resorting to immediate shutdowns. Rex Orange County, one of my favorite artists, split many of the audiences in his European concerts. Half would come in at 6pm and the other half at 9pm to limit the amount of bodies in the space. I'm not sure how effective this was, especially since his next few shows were just flat out cancelled. I anticipate this movie theatre will move towards ultimate closure as many of the others do. As much as I don't want anything to close, if it will expediate any solution, I am more than willing.
