Broadway unions band together to ask for city and state relief

Broadway News: The Coalition of Broadway Unions and Guilds, which encompasses 13 theatrical unions, has joined the call for government relief for workers across all facets of the industry.

The group, which includes unions representing press agents, actors, stagehands, musicians, playwrights, ushers and more, is calling upon the city and state to include its members in any relief packages that are created.

I really hope the government will listen to this and include the entertainment workers in any relief package that happens. I think so often in this world, people forget about the entertainment workers because they don’t really know how many people are involved in the daily in putting on shows on Broadway and elsewhere. I am not sure of the specifics but I think I read that Broadway has never been dark for this long or if they have it has been a very long time since then, so this is affecting these workers in unheard-of ways. And as this article mentions there is no way for them to do this work from home, so they are just stuck with no source of income. I am glad this Coalition of Broadway unions and guilds is pushing the government to include its members in a relief package, and I really hope it works.

It’s scary to think about how delicate this industry is in general. I want there to be a lesson here for thinking ahead or planning for the worst, but there is no way this could have been predicted. It’s great that there is unity within the Broadway unions to all work for a common goal. What this is a lesson for is our younger group of theatre artists who are only beginning their work in the industry. It’s an opportunity to watch this all ensure and be critical of each event, so you can learn from it happening again. Personally, I was watching a Broadway show 2 days before they shuttered their doors and it's scary to think about how exposed you are in that setting to respiratory droplets and the like. My grandmother met me in the city but left before the show because she didn’t want to bring anything home to my grandfather. I wonder if because of fear audience ages will change after this as more elderly folks may be tempted to skip large groups of people.
