Coronavirus: 120,000 Jobs Lost By IATSE Members In Hollywood Production Shutdown

Deadline: As the wave of film and TV production shutdowns over the coronavirus pandemic is starting to subside, their staggering impact on below-the-line workers is starting to emerge. IATSE reported Tuesday that the COVID-19-related production suspensions snd event cancellations have resulted in the loss of 120,000 jobs held by its 150,000 members. A large number of those affected work in Hollywood production but IATSE also covers live events, conventions and all people-facing businesses that have been hard hit by the coronavirus outbreak.

I hate that capitalism runs our country and world. I also hate that entities can donate millions of dollars to charities that help the overall workforce but do not replace the pay for individuals who are being impacted directly from this pandemic. It is good that some of the personnel are still being paid for these next two weeks, however, all the people who work job-to-job, this really sucks on their end. Not only are these people not earning money from a job, they also may not have a job anymore after this blows over. Many productions that are being cancelled in regional theatres were selected to go with a season of shows to fit an overarching theme, so they may not fit into the next season’s theme, therefore, they will probably not be actualized, thus all the production personnel will have one less job. I wish that our industry and country were better designed in terms of payment.
