Industry: Regional Theatres Prepare For Fallout From Mass Cancellations
www.broadwayworld.com: All across the country theatres are temporarily shutting their doors to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus. Regional theatres hosting everything from major titles like HAMILTON (both in Los Angeles and San Francisco) and CURSED CHILD to smaller non-profits like the Bay Area's Theatreworks are feeling the pressure. TheatreWorks cancelled their current production and their upcoming production of RAGTIME set to open next month.

Looking at this issue on a regional level, there is another level of anxiety caused by the financial insecurity that regional theatres have because of their nature (which is, in general, less commercial than Broadway). Broadway has a very strong flow of money throughout the year, hopefully that can keep them afloat through this crisis. Regional theatres do not necessarily have this commercialism that keeps consistent money flowing in. They must rely on other things to act as a support system. I enjoy the idea of “streaming” shows that are being performed on the stage. Perhaps it is a recorded stream, played repeatedly for audiences to protect the performers as well. As tours begin to cancel remaining performance dates, I hope to see local support for regional theatres appear with the necessary strength to provide for losses. Maybe patrons have an option to donate their ticket refund to the theatre. Small things like this add up.
